What is an academic paper?

The simple logic of IMRAD can be defined in this way: 1). What question was studied? 2). How was the problem studied? 3). What were the findings? 4). What do the findings mean? How does each of the four questions match with the component part in an academic paper?

Is IMRAD the only format for all academic papers?

Although the IMRAD format is universally used, it is not the only format for academic papers. There are, or course, exceptions. Different journals have different requirements. Other norms: IRDAM, IMRADC, IMRMRMRD, ILMRAD and so on.

Seven steps to choose a topic

  1. Understand the basic research theory and the core concepts.
  2. Know what your supervisor requires/ the university rules/journal requirements the budget.

Literature Review

An overview of the current state of research on a particular topic by evaluating and comparing various previous studies related to the topic. Reveals controversies, arguments and even weakness or gaps in current work.

Purposes/FUnctions of Literature Review

Provide a background, classifythe research into different categories and demostrate how the research in a particular area has changed over time by indicating historicl background if applicable as well as explaining recent developments in an area; clarify areas of controversy and agreement between experts in the area as well as identify dominant views; evaluate the previous research and identify gaps; help justify your search by indicating how it is different from other works in the same area.

In-text Citation Conventions

Direct quotations: as little as possible. Exception: the original source is very eloquent(有说服力的), insightful, peculiar. Paraphrasing(转述): change the vocabulary and structures of the original source, about the same length. Summarizing: contain main ideas, leave out details, much shorter. AT LAST list of references at the end.
